Living With No Regrets
Ken's Blog
SBIer Alf (owner of databasedesign-resource.com) is preparing for an adventure of a lifetime. Here's how he broke the news in the SBI! Forums...
"I am leaving solid ground for a circumnavigation of the world, lasting 3-5 years! I was invited to join a seriously funded sailing project, and I said yes.
Last year, I got early retirement, and together with the income from my website, this will be smooth sailing, so to speak. My SBI site will of course run on autopilot during the voyage; but we have computers and satellite communication on board, so no problem."
And then he added in a follow-up post what I consider to be the quote of the year...
"The old people's houses are full of people who sit and regret all the things they never did."
Honestly, it does not matter how old you are, or how many children you have, or what your disability is (within certain extreme limits, I guess)...
You can lead the life you want, or embark upon the dream you want.
It takes some discipline and work and realistic expectations. Recognize the core of a dream and scale it to reality.
And to all the nay-sayers along the way who will pooh-pooh your dreams as being "crazy, unrealistic, nobody-does-this, yada, yada, yada"... I have no time for those people, they make my blood boil because they should just keep it to themselves. I can only say to them...
Enjoy the nursing home and the regrets.
All dreams, of course, don't have to be "Alf-romantic." I know a lot of happy people raising children whose dream, for now, is exactly that. And they are happy. So it's not about how big or "small" (and I do use that word figuratively, not literally or judgmentally) or how "conventional" (ditto) your dream is...
If you are living it, or have a definite planned route there, well I guess you could say that you are Alf'ing it.
Please share your story below. I love hearing "with-no-regrets" experiences.
All the best,
