There is no such thing as certainty when starting an online business.
No entrepreneur can know whether, when or how big the profits will be. We would never have had Google (Brin and Page planned to sell corporate search to monetize). Jobs was driven by passion, a vision that computers would be on every desktop and an integral part of our lives (crackpot stuff back then). The list could go on and on, but let's come down to ground level...
If any entrepreneur in any business measured the dollars per hour s/he was making in the first year, the economy would simply grind to a halt.
There is, however, such a thing as a winning attitude...
1) Go in expecting online business success. Speaking of e-business, don't think in terms of building a "website" anymore -- always realize that you are building a business.
A positive, business-oriented attitude affects the quality of your thinking and execution.
2) Persistence. You will hit humps where growth has stopped or even gone backward. Tortoises persist until they get over them...
3) Patience. There's a reason that sayings like "one step at a time" and "Rome was not built in a day" are trite. The "trite and true" is usually "tried and true."
Every entrepreneur has the same doubts when starting out, the same worries, the same sense of being overwhelmed in this massive world of ours, online or offline..."How in this world can I ever stand out?"
Trust yourself. Trust the process. Then set back to work.
