Challenge Your Fans

Many Facebook marketers insist that messages need to be extremely simple and, if you are asking for comments, they should not require more than a few words from folks. Our experience frequently confirms a general observation that the attention span of the average Facebook visitor is short.  

What does that mean for you as a Facebook Page owner?  Recognize that reality but never underestimate your fans.  See how Theresa grabbed the attention of our fans...

Scared

"It scared the living daylights out of me."

"It's raining cats and dogs."

"Cut to the chase."

Sayings, such as the ones above, don't really make sense when you stop to think about them and yet many of us still sprinkle them into our conversations and/or writing.

Facebook Lesson

Think about what your audience does on Facebook. People are busy with status updates, images, friend requests, sharing, etc. Most don't have the patience or the time to go through long posts.  No reading equals no likes and/or no comments.

That is why most Facebook marketers recommend that you keep things simple. Ask for a "like" since that's quick to do. Comments are very valuable in the eyes of Facebook's algorithm, so by all means request them from your audience.  Just try to elicit comments that don't require a lot of thinking on the part of your busy fans.

Theresa's post didn't exactly follow that advice, however. It engaged readers with a quick but thought-provoking question. This post generated great participation and many interesting answers. (Of course, Facebook being Facebook, not every comment is completely thought out.) The funny image also helped to draw people into the conversation and fire up their neurons.

So don't be afraid to ask a little more of your audience every once in a while. They may just surprise you.
