Keyword Research

Getting an idea is extremely hard... when you are trying to get an idea. As a matter of fact, it's amazing how your mind goes blank when you just sit there and try to get an idea.

Most people aren't used to getting ideas, at least not ideas at a life-changing level. When they do get one, they fall in love with the idea, sure that this baby is the only one they'll ever get.

It's not. Pros quickly develop techniques to generate tons and tons of ideas, and then sort them out.

Ask yourself... wherever you are... whatever you hear or see or do...

"How could I develop this idea into a theme-based content site?"

Keyword Research

A website blueprint is like the blueprint for your house. It has to be complete before you lay the first brick or write your first page.

In the previous article, we discussed keyword research for your site concept. The next step is to look at the keyword research for your site’s content pages... the keywords that will form your website blueprint.

The decisions you make now determine the size of the success of all your efforts over the next 12 months, and beyond. So...

Time spent now is time well invested. The most common reason for failure in the online business world is failing to spend the necessary time here to make the right niche decision. It is not hard, but it does require patience and thought. It might even mean modifying your current site concept keyword, or choosing a different one. In other words...

Take your time and get this right. You will be well on your way to a profitable e-business.

Keyword Research - It Starts With the Site Concept, Part 2

Keyword Research

It's time to gather ideas for your site concept. Settle into your favorite chair and write your ideas into a notepad. Or go for a walk and record them with your cell phone. You could also put them into a text file on your computer, but I think this part of the work is best done away from your PC.

Keep going with this (but not forever).

Think of things you like or enjoy, things you are passionate about. What skills have you learned in your job? What do other people say you are good at? Maybe something you read in the newspaper, or in a magazine will trigger an idea. Or even a good movie.

Then, when you have your big list of ideas, work through it, and choose the three things that interest you most.

Why three?

If you have only one, you won't have anything to compare against. But when you have three site concept ideas, you can use Niche Choose It! to find the best one through a process of elimination.

But first, use Brainstorm It!'s Site Concept Finder to research keywords for all three potential site concepts in one go.

For example, let's say you're a jazz lover... your three choices could be "Jazz Canada," "Jazz Festivals" and "Jazz Guitarists." With the help of Brainstorm It!, you may find that one has great potential, one's a loser, and one is in-between.

The Site Concept Finder is a time-saving tool that can help with

  • sparking a new niche or site concept
  • clarifying your ideas (and thinking), with a number of keywords related to the site concept
  • identifying possible sub-topics
  • identifying how broad or narrow a niche is
  • choosing the most viable site concept
  • realizing that the niche is not viable, and indicate to re-start your research.

This might sound like a lot of work, but it's worth every minute of your time. If no one is interested in your niche, or if the competition is too strong, you won't get much traffic. Without traffic, you might as well not have a website. You'd be invisible!

Keyword Research - It Starts With the Site Concept

Keyword Research

It's important to ensure, when doing keyword research, that you don't become number-bound. Always keep in mind that computers return only keywords and numbers. They are not able to think. Use your brain when analyzing keywords.

It's also important to take your time with your keyword research. Rushing at this early stage will result in your site being built on a shaky foundation. And if the foundation is weak, it won't be easy to build a successful web site. Investing the time at this stage will pay dividends farther down the road. Skimping now can result in disappointment, and almost certain failure later.

It's worth mentioning that a "keyword" can be a single word, or a multi-word phrase.

For example, "Anguilla" is a keyword, and "Anguilla resorts" is also a keyword. Think of what you enter at a search engine, and keep this in mind when you do your keyword research.

The first brick in your site's foundation starts with your site concept keyword.

Your site concept is your site's central theme (or niche). Choose this keyword carefully so that your site will have a solid foundation, upon which you'll be able to build your site's content effectively. Those content pages are about topics related to your site concept. Think of your site concept as an electrical current running through a house: it's available in every room.

Briefly, a good site concept should...

  1. Be in demand. There should be a reasonable number of people searching for the keyword.
  2. Not be too broad. A site concept that is too broad will have very high competition, and it will take a lot of time to "own" the niche.
  3. Excite you. Choosing something that you're excited about will turn "work" into pleasure. That way, you'll find it easy to write the content for your site.
  4. Have high ROI (return on investment) potential. Your keyword should be able to be monetized. It's always a good idea to be able to diversify, thus giving you more than one option to monetize.
  5. Be in sync with your available time to work on your site. For example, if you have only an hour a week, choosing a highly competitive niche will not give you the expected results.

Brainstorm It!, SBI!'s keyword research tool, can help you with #1, #2 and #4. And Niche Choose It! can help you make your final decision based on all five points, plus any others you may think of.

It was Benjamin Franklin who said, "Those who fail to plan, plan to fail." Plan to invest enough time to do your keyword research thoroughly.

No demand (or too much competition) = No traffic = No income.
